About the exhibition
Japanese Consulate, Melbourne
An exhibition by painters who have met regularly in Carlton, Melbourne, under the guidance of Richard Liddicut. Their practice involves working from traditional sumi e (Japanese ink paintings) and shodo (Japanese calligraphy) models, some western art techniques, and improvisation on all of these.
The artists
Indra Berzins
Intimate, individual landscapes where paper, ink, and water are priorities.
Julian Cornish
A sincere search to express the Australian bush in sumi e.
Derek Lord
Simple, careful stroke based painting in space.
Peter Willis
An eclectic mixture of a traditional motif, improvised drawing and abstract play.
